Fairlight - Dead Ringer

Nerds united!

So. Was für einen Triathleten der IronMan auf Hawaii oder für einen Footballfan das Superbowl, ist für den Demoscener die Assembly Party in Helsinki - zumindest im traditionellen Sinne. Und so jährte sich die Assembly auch am ersten August Wochenende 2006 zum 14 mal.
Ohne groß über die einzelnen Releases und Results zu reden, möchte ich lediglich etwas über Fairlights "Dead Ringer" sagen. Vorweg: der große, grinsende Gewinner war sicher Fairlight (neben The Black Lotus). Aber zurück zu Dead Ringer, dem Gewinner der 64kb Intro Section.

Da haben sich auch die Richtigen gefunden - Reed und Smash in einer Traumkostellation.

Wie geil ist dieses Intro bitte?

Reed hatte sich für klaren Funk House Synth entschieden, während Smash ganz klar auf Oldschool gesetzt hat. Interessant übrigens, dass Maktone, den man ja eher durch seine bestechenden Chiptunes kennt, vorbildliche Grafiken spendiert hat.
Und scheinbar hat ryg mit seinem exepacker kkrunchy ebenfalls einen dankenswerten Beitrag geleistet (übrigens: toller Seminarbeitrag auf der breakpoint übers komprimieren von ihm!).
Tja, schade, dass dies wohl das letzte Intro von Fairlight sein wird, aber man weiß ja nie.

Nunja, laber, laber, laber - einfach mal selbst hier reinziehen!

OpenGL Hacking Part 1

Today I finished the first part of my OpenGL tutorial, having the red book of OpenGL next to my keyboard. I was pretty surprised how easy it can be to assemble a simple 3-D object with textures. The screenshot shows my very first demo with two pictes of me on a rotating cube. It is very simple but it looks nice - in comparison to the less code it needed.

Do you have a pair of anaglyphic 3d glasses with you? Are you interested in a different kind of computer demos? Are you interested in computer demos at all? Well if you are so, follow this link which will lead you to "fr-044: patient zeroand" and experience why farbrausch did win the intro competition on the Simulaatio 3D, held in Varkaus, Finland on 10.-12.6.2005 (same timespan when Hurricane was).
Yes, you as one of my smartes blog-reader, will have noticed that the "3D" themed the party. Oh, and did I mention the intro's size, which is 64kb - as usual?

First I just wanted to mention that great screensaver based on an Assembly'04 invitation intro by Moppi Productions, where its flowers react to music you are listening to. After investigating in the web I thought about my current favorites and thought this would be worth being a blog (as usual).

So in the style of random($foo), I present his recent favs - which are also mine:

Moppi's Assembly 2004 Invite (the mesmerizing flower effect is also available as a Windows screen saver!)
Binary Flow - this invite for Assembly 2005 is pretty astounding considering it's a 64K.
fresh! - it really is. A great 64K, and not a glow or blur in sight
155/95 - this won Breakpoint, and is sort of a one-trick pony, but my is that some trick (HDR, baby)
Planet Risk - a ridiculous amount of effects. Not one falls on its face
Breakpoint 2005 Invite - it's a bit long, but has a real old-skool feel to it and a nice party flavor that's really hard to resist
we cell - ahh, gotta love that fecal blur - an impressive number of organic effects
The Popular Demo - it's 2 years old, but still one of my favs. The production values and execution are great

In November of 2003 both groups farbrausch and haujobb made a co-production 'time-index' for the Simulaatio2 2003.
With success, since they made the 2nd place. Melwyn made the music by using kb's softsynth V2, kb the synth voice and visualice his well known weird graphics.

I really do like that demo, especially the music mixed with those lyrics. The music is actually a 19/4 beat, just mixed to normal 4/4 form as melwyn described. Very unusual for an intro-music. And all this is done (again) in only 64kb.

Heart Shaped Box

I was always wondering how

So after asking him directly he sent me the complete sourcecodes with all things included. Again, many thanks, matti. I will look over it again and again to learn more about his techniques in adding noise layer on top of the pictures, cross-fading two layers, zooming and actually implementing a basic scene script engine.

Scene.org Awards 2004 nominees announced

After weeks of exhausting deliberations and votes, the official Scene.org Awards 2004 jury is once again ready to unravel the list of nominees for this year's issue, as well as the nominations in the Public choice's award, as determined through the public vote.

For the first time this year, the Jury chose to extend the nomination list in two categories (Best demo and Best direction) to propose a wider view of the contestants in those categories, in the spirit of competition and diversity.

The final results will be given during the ceremony at Breakpoint 2005, in Bingen am Rhein in Germany on the 26th of march 2005. Hope to see you there.

How Gargaj's Sunrise made my day

Okay, I was watching demos from the function'04 demoparty held in hungary the other day when I came to party's winner "Structure" by Ümlaüt Design. The demo is great and became the 1st place without any doubts. But the thing which really grabbed me was the music by Gargaj: Sunrise. Nice beats and the atmosphere I really do like. He tagged this tune as "electronica" and "intelligent dance music" which descibes this music pretty good.

So listening to this music on my mp3-player while driving to work I had to think about all sorts of things - but all were good so this track made my day. It can be that simple.

An advisable musicdisk

Hitchhikr did it again.

A musicdisk is a program containing some more or less good tracks (often chiptune music) embedded in a nice graphical userinterface.
So after a friend of mine told me about TRSI's latest musicdisk written by hitchhikr I was amazed not only by the interface itself but exceedingly by its great music. My favorite song is still "poisonous" dominated by Elli K.'s unbelievably voice. Actually her voice reminds me of björk..

So feel free to download this great musicdisk down and don't fear the 30Megs of this archive, since it is a MP3 disk.
